TOLERANCE HAS BEEN A MIXED BLESSING
THAT’S BROUGHT US TO A PIVOTAL MOMENT
America is based on a great proposition…
“that you are free to think of yourself pretty much any way you like as long as you accept that others can think of themselves anyway they like; that everybody has claim to a set of basic rights; and that, on those terms, we can all live together.”
This is what I call The American Idea, and it’s the focus of an essay which I’ve contributed to the online journal, Ethika Politika.
In this piece I explore how The American Idea came about, and how it’s given us both a high degree of tolerance and certain disturbing moral weaknesses — weaknesses which are particularly apparent to those people who are new to our shores.
Indeed, The American Idea has presented a challenge to each immigrant group. Recent Muslim immigrants find it especially vexing, as do many people who claim no religious affiliation — secularists — and who have benefited from that very tolerance of the free thinking by which they identify themselves.
Please go over to Ethika Politika, and take a few minutes to read my thoughts. And then, if you would be so kind, come back to this blog and leave your comments.
