THE NATION’S COURSE
STILL ISN’T DETERMINED
Two weeks after the election that signaled the end of the Obama Era, it’s beginning to dawn on some people — if grudgingly — that Donald Trump’s win was something other than an assertion of “white privilege” on a national scale.
It really did represent a reaction to actual problems.
Now, to be sure, a few folks are holding onto the theory that for eight years…
“Those damned Republicans were determined to block everything Obama tried to do.”
Others persist in writing the situation off as…
“Things were so bad after Bush, that Obama couldn’t bring us back no matter how hard he tried.”
And in certain quarters there’s a lingering assumption that…
“This country was just never going to let a black man succeed.”
…as if all businesses and workers colluded — out of sheer racial orneriness — to preserve Obama’s record-low economic growth.
Looking back, it’s hard to recall that the election of 2008 was, generally speaking, a moment of pride and anticipation. Obama’s “Hope” meme was potent. It described accurately how huge numbers of people were so elated at the prospect of the nation’s first non-white president that they chose to disregard (in many cases, didn’t even want to know about) Obama’s background and connections in radical Leftist circles.
Surely, he was viewed by black people as a vindication for the historic wrongs their ancestors had suffered.
White people, too, saw vindication.
After endless charges of endemic, irredeemable racism, finally having a man of at least mixed-racial heritage in the White House seemed a fitting conclusion to the progress toward racial justice begun with the Civil War.
Fast-forward to 2016. Trump’s victory testifies to a profound fading of hope.
For all the nonsense being slung around about how Trump energized the “Alt-Right,” the American electorate (outside the enclaves of Leftist delusion) has voted for a change in our national direction.
Trump won because the Left has failed.
So the Left is striking back.
There is no “Alt-Right” — none to speak of anyway — not at this moment in history. What we’re seeing is merely an artificial aggrandizement of a few millennial bloggers who want to turn warmed-over Nazism into an Internet sensation. Some may be genuine white-supremacists, and over time the numbers might grow. But right now they’re miniscule, and they have negligible influence among people who consider themselves Conservative.
Giving the “Alt-Right” such undue attention is just the latest tactic on the Left’s strategic menu — intended to serve the purpose of disinformation. They seek to paint Trump as Hitler in a way similar to how the current fuss about “false news” is aimed at discrediting non-establishment media sources.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing’s a false-flag operation and there’s George Soros money in the “Alt-Right” itself. Their undemocratic predilections are more in line with the Political Correctness instincts of the Left, after all.
And then there’s the recount of votes in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. The Green Party’s Jill Stein is spearheading this quixotic plan, and the Clinton campaign is giving it at least moral support.
Who’s really footing the bill for this counting? Is it Soros? Is it the Clinton Foundation?
Is it all just a fund-raising scam?
Nobody believes this effort will change the election’s outcome. Even Clinton campaign lawyer Marc Elias admits there’s no…
“actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology,” according to Bloomberg News.
But it does help to keep people on edge. And to make The Donald’s assumption of presidential power all the bumpier.
And let’s not forget about those death threats which some Electoral College delegates have been receiving.
For a half century we’ve endured a relentless drive to distort the U.S. Constitution, alter the shape of our representative government, and diminish our position in the world. For the past eight years it’s been conducted in high gear.
As I observed right after the election, we’ve been given an opportunity to…
“break the back of the Leftist cabal that has so thoroughly reduced our nation. We must change the trajectory of our shared destiny. We must seize this chance at true reform in the name of authentic American Constitutionalism….
“And to make this reform possible we’ve gotten a reprieve from our downward national slide.
“But it’s only a reprieve. It won’t last long. And it won’t be peaceful.”
In fact, it’s already running out.
The past year has been a time of great tension, anxiety and conflict. The coming months will likely be worse.
It’s the Left that’s energized, not the so-called “Alt-Right.”
Leftists know that they face the most active resistance since the Reagan era. Their agenda is being vigorously opposed around the world — from the populist “Brexit” of Britain out of the EU, to the rise of Conservative parties across Europe, to Donald Trump’s ascendancy here at home.
The Left understands that it has a very narrow window of opportunity to impede these trends. And so they’ll be pushing all the harder.
This represents a considerable challenge to us, as citizens and as people of faith.
We must find the spiritual strength to endure the conflict — at the same time as we persevere in encouraging our leaders to stay the course and not buckle under pressure — all the while we maintain some measure of charity toward our fellow Americans who are caught up in Leftist delusion, allowing themselves to be used as pawns in a great wicked game.
This election wasn’t really about either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. People were voting to determine the future of America.
And the outcome isn’t settled.
A couple of hours after I posted this essay I came across the following tweet from regular Huffington Post contributor David Yankovich. It’s a perfect illustration of what I’m talking about…
Interviewed on the daily podcast, “The Gist,” columnist Ben Shapiro, former Breitbart News editor-at-large, gave the “Alt-Right” somewhat more credence than I do. The recipient of much anti-Semitic abuse in “Alt-Right”-sympathetic Facebook and Twitter circles, Shapiro described certain sleight-of-hand tactics at work…
“They’ve been trying to broaden the definition of alt-right so they can suck people into believing they’re alt-right even though they don’t believe the central tenets of the alt-right.”
Shapiro cautioned the Left against helping to bolster the movement through their own over-the-top rhetoric and hysterical attacks on Donald Trump, observing…

If the sparse “Alt-Right” contingent is overly focused on race, you can bet the situation is far worse on the Left. Writing on Intellectual Takeout, Martin Cothran, editor of the magazine, Classical Teacher, observes how racial pot-stirring didn’t work out quite as expected…
“The problem with liberals is that they want all the advantages of racial politics and none of the detriments. They have succeeded in weaponizing entire racial groups, but when they find that they have inadvertently weaponized the ones who vote the other way, they get upset.”
Freelance writer and social media analyst Aaron Bandler is convinced that Jill Stein’s recount effort is a fund-raising scam. He offers seven reasons why on the Daily Wire…
The tenacity of the Left is amply illustrated by two recent articles…
First is this scorched-earth rant by New York Times columnist Charles Blow who refused to attend a recent editorial board meeting with Donald Trump…
“I will say proudly and happily that I was not present at this meeting. The very idea of sitting across the table from a demagogue who preyed on racial, ethnic and religious hostilities and treating him with decorum and social grace fills me with disgust, to the point of overflowing. Let me tell you here where I stand on your ‘I hope we can all get along’ plea: Never.”
Second is a revealing report on comments by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor (Barack Obama’s “wise Latina”) in which the impartial jurist encouraged Leftists to keep up their anti-Trump protests, advising that…
“we can’t afford to give up our pursuing of values that we and others have fought so hard to achieve.”
Ahem… Might I remind the good Madame Justice that it is not for those who hold seats on the Supreme Court to pursue values, but rather to defend the Constitution.
The estimable Victor Davis Hanson of the Hoover Institution offers his uniquely balanced perspective on why voters preferred The Donald over Hillary…
“That Hillary Clinton never got beyond her email scandals, the pay-for-play Clinton Foundation wrongdoing, and the Wikileaks and Guccifer hackings reminded the electorate that whatever Trump was or had done, he at least had not brazenly broken federal law as a public servant, or colluded with the media and the Republican National Committee to undermine the integrity of the primaries and sabotage his Republican rivals.”
No one sees things more clearly or explains them better. From Hoover’s Defining Ideas journal…
Finally — what goes around comes around. Donald Trump, who did so much to advance Hillary Clinton’s 2008 whisper campaign about Barack Obama’s alleged Kenya birth, has been outed as an international transplant himself. According to the UK’s Daily Mail…
“Pakistani news channel Neo News ran an extraordinary report suggesting that the President-elect was born as Dawood Ibrahim Khan in Waziristan in 1946.”
