A MID-EAST EXPERT DISSECTS
THE SITUATION IN SYRIA
Ya can’t read everything. But I wish — before posting my last item — I’d come upon this excellent analysis of the Middle East situation by Jesuit Father Samir Khalil Samir, professor of philosophy, theology and Islamic studies at St. Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. It provides a good summation of conditions in Syria and the dangers we face in doing…well, in doing just about anything.
Egyptian by birth, Fr. Samir points to America’s misreading of events in his homeland — the view that the overthrow of Mubarak and subsequent power grab by the Muslim Brotherhood were expressions of democracy — are being relived in our perceptions of the situation in Syria…
“What I hear from the West is absolutely wrong,” Fr. Samir says in an interview with the National Catholic Register.
